Final Reflection - MHST 631

When I reflect back on the entire semester, I am confident that my understanding of health promotion has expanded, and I also feel that I have learned various new concepts related to health promotion that I can apply in my current position as a public health nurse. Developing and implementing health promotion initiatives is a crucial part of my daily responsibilities as a public health nurse. I have thoroughly enjoyed designing a health promotion initiative for a health problem that is applicable to my role as a nurse within the sexual health and harm reduction program. The research I completed for each assignment related to syphilis has broadened my knowledge related to the contributing factors to rising rates of infections and is directly applicable to my current role. I will now be able to utilize this new found knowledge while working alongside my team members to develop health promotion initiatives that are evidenced based and relevant to the vulnerable groups within our region.

I would have to say that my thoughts regarding the MHST631 course are primarily positive. I have especially valued the opportunities for discussion as well as the creative freedom that this course provides. Furthermore, I appreciate that this course allows students to select topics relevant to their various fields of work and share personal experiences that are applicable to course discussions.

My most exciting discovery in this course has been the significance of using diverse theories, models, and frameworks to drive health promotion planning, implementation, and evaluation. The third assignment within this course challenged me to develop my own model of health related to my chosen health problem of rising syphilis infections. This assignment allowed me to analyze various theories, models, and frameworks in order to develop a model relevant to my chosen topic area. Developing this model enabled me to understand the factors that contribute to this particular health issue and how these contributing factors are often intertwined. However, my most powerful learning moment was recognizing that most health models overlap with one another and share principles that are applicable to a wide range of health issues.

I very much look forward to completing MHST632 in the near future, where I hope to learn more about situational assessments and priority setting.
