Reflecting upon my progress throughout the first half of the MHST631 course, I believe I have gained a greater understanding of the complexity of what health promotion encompasses, as well as how to effectively implement health promotion strategies in my field of work. My experience in public health has provided me with a strong foundational understanding of health promotion, however, this course has broadened and strengthened my knowledge. Since health promotion is a topic that interests me, I was pleased to see that a course was being offered as part of this master’s program.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first two assignments within this course and always appreciate the chance to draw on relevant work experience and apply existing knowledge to my coursework. I chose to research and design a health promotion initiative surrounding rising syphilis infections within the Halton community. A topic that I am very familiar with, but I wanted to delve deeper to better understand the underlying cause of this issue and how to best address it. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of information available related to rising syphilis infections. However, I discovered that there was limited information in the literature regarding current health promotion initiatives to address this issue.
I am eager to learn more about various health promotion models in order to address my topic of rising syphilis infections within the Halton community. The knowledge I gain from this course is directly applicable to my current position as a public health nurse, and I look forward to applying this new knowledge to current program planning and health promotion efforts. I would also like to learn more about evaluation methods for health promotion initiatives and programs. I understand the importance of ongoing assessment however, I would like to delve deeper into the steps associated with proper evaluation and the tools to assist in the process.
